What a birth plan is for
A birth plan is a valuable tool for expressing your wishes, your values and your needs the day you give birth.
It serves to communicate clearly with the medical team and your birth companion so that your experience is as respected and as personalized as possible. In writing your birth plan, you take the time to think about what you want for labour, for pain management, for your partner's presence, and for baby's first care.
At Ysé Naissance, we support you in creating a realistic, caring birth plan, so you can experience your birth with confidence and peace of mind.
When should I write my birth plan?
The birth plan can be written at any point in pregnancy, but ideally around seventh or eighth month. That gives you time to discuss your choices with your birth companion, your partner and your medical team, and to adjust your wishes as needed.
Is a birth plan mandatory?
No, it isn't required, but it is strongly recommended. A birth plan makes it easier to communicate with your care team and helps you feel in charge of your birth. It doesn't impose anything — it's a reference point so your needs are heard and respected.

FAQ: understanding the birth plan
Why write a birth plan?
Write a birth plan lets you set out your intentions, your needs and your limits before the big day.
It's a way of regain confidence in your body and your choices, while making communication with the medical team easier. It contributes to a calmer birth experience, one that is respected and aligned with your values.
Is the birth plan respected in hospital?
Yes — most medical teams today welcome the birth plan as a tool for conversation. It doesn't replace medical decisions in an emergency, but it guides the team to honour your preferences as much as possible. The key is to discuss it ahead of time with your doctor, midwife or doula.
What if my birth doesn't go as planned?
A birth plan isn't a rigid contract: it's a starting point for discussion. It can evolve as needs change. The goal isn't to control everything, but to stay in charge of your choices, even if things change. We help you build a flexible plan that gently leaves room for the unexpected.
Should I give my birth plan to the hospital before labour?
It's recommended. You can give a copy to your midwife, doctor or the maternity ward before your estimated due date. On the day, keep a printed copy so you can share it easily with the team on hand.
Can I make a birth plan without a doula?
Yes, but having support makes it easier to think things through and put your wishes into words. A doula or birth companion helps you clarify your priorities, understand your options and write a document that's clear, respectful and complete.
Can the birth plan cover postpartum too?
Absolutely! More and more women are building into their birth plan sections on the first days after the birth : rest, visitors, breastfeeding, emotional support… At Ysé Naissance, we believe in this whole-person approach, centred on continuity of care.
