  1. What is the role of a doula?

The presence of a doula during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period goes well beyond simple physical support. A doula is a Swiss army knife, her role is multifaceted, aiming to offer holistic support to ensure that your experience of motherhood is as positive and fulfilling as possible.

Here are the different aspects of the role of a doula:

  • Emotional support : Its main role is to offer you ongoing emotional support. Whether it's discussing your concerns, providing an attentive shoulder, or helping you manage the emotional fluctuations that can accompany pregnancy, she's there to create a space where you feel understood and supported, without judgment.

  • Education and information : As a doula, she is committed to providing you detailed information on all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Its goal is to help you make informed decisions by providing you with accurate and current information on the options available to you. The information provided is based on the latest clinical guidelines from the SOGC, SCP and literature review (cochrane, pubmed).

  • Physical support : During labor, she assists you with comfort techniques such as positioning, massage and breathing to relieve pain and promote a smoother delivery.

  • Advocacy and communication : She is there to be your advocate to medical staff, ensuring that your preferences and choices are respected. Its presence helps facilitate open communication between you, your partner and the medical team.

  • Preparing for childbirth : By working with you and your partner, she helps you develop a birth plan, discuss your expectations, and prepare yourself physically and mentally for childbirth.

  • Postnatal support : After birth, she continues to support you by providing advice on breastfeeding and infant sleep and by being there to discuss your experience and answer your questions.

As a doula, her commitment is to surround you with continuous, personalized and caring support throughout your journey. Its goal is to create a space where you feel supported, listened to and confident at every stage of this adventure.

2. What salary for a doula?

The term "salary" is often replaced by "remuneration" in the context of doulas, as most practice as self-employed.

  • The remuneration of a doula can vary depending on several factors such as geographic location, experience, and full range of services offered.

  • Find all our service prices here .

  • It is essential to note that a doula's remuneration reflects not only the time spent during childbirth, care for childbirth (from 38 weeks) but also pre and pre meetings postnatal, as well as continuous monitoring.

  • Some packages can also be offered to encompass all services.

The flexibility of pricing allows doulas to personalize their remuneration according to the specific needs of each client, thus guaranteeing tailor-made support throughout the journey for parents.

3. What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?

Unlike midwives who have medical training and can deliver, doulas focus on emotional, physical and informative support. I work in tandem with healthcare professionals to ensure you receive the best care possible.

  • Medical care: Midwives can perform medical examinations, diagnoses and prescribe medications. Doulas do not provide medical care and cannot perform medical tasks, but they do offer a emotional, physical and informative support.

  • Emotional and physical support: Doulas specialize in emotional and physical support throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. They provide advice, relaxation and comfort techniques. Midwives also integrate these aspects into their care, but with a greater emphasis on medical aspects.

  • Place of delivery: Midwives can attend the birth at home, in a birthing center or in hospital. Doulas attend childbirth in support, working hand in hand with medical staff, they can provide ongoing support whatever location you choose.

  • Nature of Support: Midwives provide comprehensive medical support, while doulas focus more on emotional, physical and informative support, thus complementing medical care.

In summary, the main difference is in the nature and extent of services provided, with midwives providing comprehensive medical care and doulas focusing on non-medical support.

4. What diploma to be a doula?

In Quebec, several certification trainings are recognized for those who wish to become a doula. It is important to choose training that meets your needs and is accredited by professional organizations (such as the ANPQ, for example).

Here is the route:

  1. Basic birth attendant training (Doula), approximately 250 hours of training

  2. Perinatal Naturopath training (Doula certified and capable of issuing insurance receipts), 1200 hours of training

  3. Advanced training. Several advanced training courses exist to help you advance your practice (Spinning babies, De Gasquet, thalassotherapy bath, Rebozo and many others...).

These training courses are accompanied by supervised field courses to be validated.

5. Why call a doula?

In addition to offering you physical and emotional support, she is there to guide you in your choices, help you create a birth plan and provide you the necessary information to make informed decisions

By choosing a doula in Montreal, you are opting for personalized support that focuses on your physical and emotional well-being. Do not hesitate to contact me to discuss how I can support your maternity journey in a meaningful and supportive way.
