Lost mucus plug: 5 signs to observe.
What is mucus plug?
The mucous plug is a gelatinous substance made up of mucus, produced by the cervix from the start of pregnancy. Its role: to protect the fetus from infections by forming a barrier at the cervix.
It acts a bit like an airtight "natural plug" throughout pregnancy. Without it, bacteria or infectious agents could more easily reach the water bag. 🌷
When do you lose the mucus plug?
Loss of mucus plug is not an emergency. Typically, this event occurs in the last days or even weeks of pregnancy, sometimes well before labor begins.
For some, it happens 2 weeks before childbirth, for others, just a few hours before regular contractions appear.
This highly variable timing depends on how quickly your cervix begins to change. I regularly receive questions on this point during my support: it is therefore essential to don't be alarmed if you lose your mucus plug prematurely, especially in the absence of other symptoms.
| Period of loss | Estimated percentage (average) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 2 weeks before delivery | 30 % | The body prepares slowly |
| A few days before | 40 % | Imminent pre-labor phase |
| 24–48 hours before | 20 % | Work can begin soon |
| In the middle of the work phase | 10 % | Advanced collar opening |
What does mucus plug loss look like?
This is undoubtedly the most widespread question 🧐. Many women wonder if they will be able to identify this moment. Don't panic: loss of the mucus plug typically results in a sticky substance, transparent or whitish, sometimes tinged with traces of blood ("dew loss" or red/brown filaments).
Volume: the equivalent of two teaspoons, sometimes more.
Texture: gelatinous, thick, viscous ("egg white" appearance).
Color: white, pale yellow, pink, brown or sometimes with a slight trickle of blood.
It is not uncommon for the mucus plug to be lost several times, or not even noticed. This phenomenon is not similar when the waters break ! Amniotic fluid is very liquid and colorless, while the mucus plug is thicker and colored.

What signs show that childbirth is approaching after loss of mucus plug?
Loss of mucus plug is a signal — but not the only one! Here 5 signs that childbirth is slowly but surely approaching :
⏰ Regular and close contractions
This is the most reliable sign. The contractions become more and more intense, regular, do not stop at rest and bring baby closer to meeting you!🌊 Water loss
A feeling of sudden or continuous discharge, very different from the texture of the mucous plug. After this step, immediately check if the liquid is tinted or if labor is struggling to begin.🤰 Feeling of pressure in the pelvis
Many women feel that the baby is "going down" or one heaviness in the pelvis, sometimes accompanied by an increased urge to urinate.💨 Gastrointestinal changes
Diarrhea, nausea, or a natural "cleaning" of the body are common in the last days.🧹 Nesting
A sudden boost of energy, the irresistible urge to tidy up and prepare the nest, is a common hormonal signal among expectant mothers.
However, these signs can vary greatly from person to person. Sometimes the mucus plug is lost without any other noticeable symptoms immediately following.
Should I consult a professional after the loss of the mucus plug?
Lose your mucus plug is usually not a reason to go to the hospital or at the maternity ward. It is simply a clue that the body is preparing for childbirth.
However, I emphasize the importance of contacting your healthcare professional without delay:
If the loss is accompanied by heavy bleeding (more than a normal period).
If you feel any severe and sudden pain or discomfort.
If the water loss occurs (especially if it is greenish, brownish, or strong-smelling).
If you are less than 37 weeks pregnant : Loss of the plug could signal a threat of premature birth.
Do not hesitate to share your symptoms with your midwife, doula, or doctor.
In summary
The loss of the mucus plug is an indicator that the body is preparing for childbirth, but it does not always mean an imminent departure to the maternity ward. Other signs, such as regular contractions, the baby's descent or water loss, deserve increased vigilance. Remember that there is no typical scenario, each journey to birth is unique. 💖
