Pregnancy monitoring without a family doctor: what to do?

Without a family doctor, who can monitor pregnancy in Quebec?

In Quebec, it is unfortunately not uncommon to find yourself without a family doctor when you discover a pregnancy 🤰.

The system offers several effective and safe alternatives to avoid leaving future mothers without support.

Several options are available to you:

👩‍⚕️ CLSC monitoring. A general practitioner can take care of you, even if you are not already patient. Each CLSC is attached to a hospital which will take care of you for the delivery. Pregnancy monitoring is covered by the RAMQ.

Here is the list of CLSC to contact.

🥼 Follow-up in the GMF Clinic. This is the Family Medicine Group clinic. Some accept new patients for pregnancy monitoring. To find the one near you, go to the website CIUSS of your residential area, you can then target the search by neighborhood.

🧑‍⚕ ️ Follow-up in birth center. A midwife en maison de birth can support you if you opt for a more natural and personalized approach (but be careful, places are limited).

Here is the list birth centers in Montreal.

💐 Follow-up in private clinic. This follow-up can be covered by your insurance and gives you access to a dedicated medical team.

The important thing is to act early: contact a clinic, birthing center or community organization as soon as possible to begin your follow-up.

How do I start pregnancy monitoring if I don't have a family doctor?

In the whirlwind of pregnancy announcement, the worry of being "without a family doctor" is very common. I often receive this question at the start of support. Here is the procedure to follow:

💌 Contact your local CLSC. Explain your situation: they will carry out an assessment of your needs. Some CLSCs offer service points dedicated to pregnancy monitoring.

🏥 Consult a family medicine group (GMF) accepting new patients for pregnancy.

🚺 Consult the obstetrics reference service in your region. Several regions have centralized waiting lists to distribute available follow-ups between doctors, midwives, guidance counselors and nurses.

🥼 Register for the GAMF (Access desk to a family doctor), specifying that you are pregnant (this could speed up the process).

🧘🏼 Consider follow-up with a midwife by contacting the nearest birth center. Please note, waiting lists are sometimes long, but your request remains confidential and processed diligently.

Pregnancy without a family doctor: who to contact in an emergency?

👉 What should you do if you experience contractions, bleeding, decreased fetal movements or any other worrying symptoms during your pregnancy without medical monitoring?

Here are the options to consider:

  • Walk-in clinics : Many clinics accept minor emergencies for pregnant women. Tell reception your situation.

  • CLSC or local service point : Many have teams dedicated to obstetrics and can provide rapid guidance depending on the situation.

  • Info-Santé line 811 : You will be directed to the resource best suited to your state of health.

  • Hospital emergencies : As soon as the baby's life or yours seems in danger (heavy bleeding, fluid loss, fever, sharp pain, etc.), go to the nearest obstetric room immediately.

  • Your birth attendant : Even if she is not a medical staff, she will be able to support you, reassure you, and direct you to the appropriate services.

Keep an up-to-date contact list on hand throughout the pregnancy, including your pharmacist, local emergency numbers and that of your birth attendant if you have one.
