What are pressure points?
Pressure points are specific areas of the body where applied pressure can trigger beneficial reactions, including pain relief.
These techniques are based on principles borrowed from reflexology and acupressure, disciplines from traditional Chinese medicine.
Here's how they work to relieve pain during childbirth:
🧠 Nerve stimulation: by activating specific points, we partially block the pain signals sent to the brain.
💛 Endorphin release: pressure encourages the production of natural hormones that alleviate pain.
🧘🏽♀️ Muscle relaxation: it reduces tension and helps with better stress management.
By combining these effects, pressure points offer a natural method to accompany contractions and improve comfort during labor.
Pressure points to know to relieve childbirth
✋ Hand point (Hoku/LI4) : located between the thumb and index finger, it helps relieve the pain of contractions and promotes a state of relaxation.
🦵 Ankle point (Sanyinjiao/SP6) : placed just above the inner ankle bone, it stimulates the progression of labor and regulates contractions.
💃 Lower back point (BL32) : located in the hollow of the sacrum, it is ideal for reducing the intensity of contractions in the active phase.
These points, simple to locate, are often used in addition to techniques such as acupressure or there bonapace method, which relies on their effectiveness for a more comfortable delivery.

How to use pressure points?
Techniques for effective pressure
Apply firm but not painful pressure with your fingertips, thumb, or even a soft tool like a massage ball. Maintain pressure for the duration of the contraction, then release.
Pressure points can be combined with several techniques to maximize their effectiveness and provide increased relief during childbirth:
💆♀️ Massage : relaxation of tense muscles, complement to relief of contractions.
🌬 Breathing techniques : amplification of relaxation and reduction of pain.
🧘🏽♀️ Mobility and positions : facilitate labor while targeting areas of tension, facilitate the baby's descent into the pelvis.
🔥 Heat or cold : stimulation of points by combining them with hot or cold compresses.
☁️ Visualizations : synergy with points to strengthen concentration and relaxation.
These methods provide comprehensive support for pain management.

Precautions to take
Pressure points are generally safe when applied correctly, but some precautions are necessary.
Apply moderate pressure and adjust as the person feels. Always consult a professional before using these techniques, especially if medical complications exist.
When to avoid pressure points?
❌ In the case of high-risk pregnancy, complications such as the threat of premature birth, or if certain points cause intense discomfort, it is best to avoid. Use during childbirth and not during pregnancy.
